Backyard pool advice and recs!

Hi! We are looking into adding a pool to our backyard and would love any and all advice. If you have been through this process before what do you wish you did different, or if you have a current pool what are any pros/cons you would recommend. Salt pool or chlorine?! We are in Texas!

Other than washing your kids sneakers- any tips on stinky shoes? Every time I wash their shoes I swear they shrink and then my kids complain. Is there anything else you do to keep you kids sneakers lasting longer?
