Low confidence / resilience kid
-
I have a kid who is having low self-confidence and issues with resilience. Even struggling over the smallest thing is setting them over the edge, uncontrollable tears, negative self-talk etc. They have stopped wanting to try new things and just all around seem to be retracting. I'm worried that scheduling time with an OT will just draw more attention to it and increase the self-esteem issues. Has anyone tried anything like the Build Legends app that I keep getting targeted by?

Okay this is really hard but I think we’ve all been there. My child’s therapist emphasizes not taking away the stressor but helping them navigate the stressor in a less stressful way.
Also have you ruled out sickness, lingering infections, nutrient deficiencies? Sleeping enough? Going through a growth spurt? I really narrowed that down for you (kidding-sorry!!) -
I would try letting them see you struggle and fail at something. Plan a day and prep them ahead of time that you are not going to be good at trying this new something, whatever it is. For example tell them you are taking them with you to try ice skating for the first time. Let them watch you fall and bust your ass a few times but make sure and laugh it off the whole time and be confident you’re having the best time ever teaching your kid about resilience and skill building. Then explain to them that we all look silly and are not “good” when we are learning something new and just starting out. The kids are always watching and listening so make sure you have your resilience on full display at ALL times! Hope this helps and let me know how it goes.
